Why Good Woodworking Plans Are Important In Woodworking
Let's face it. What are the chances your chosen woodwork project comes out fine first time, if you haven't invested in planning it through? Not only does careful project planning saves you money (just think about the wasted materials), but it can also save you a lot of time. And if you are a beginner, planning is even more important. However, the great thing is that if you find a decent woodworking plan, all these things have been taken care of already.
A good woodworking plan should include details of materials of course, but should also give you an idea of how long your project will take (at least a rough idea), how easy or difficult it is to achieve and what tools you'll need.
You should expect to see step-by-step instructions and if you get yourself one of the plans that are available on the internet, you'll find that some of them even include detailed videos, which of course makes it even easier for you to get it right first time. Really, every detail of the whole woodworking process should be available and of course you'll also see what the finished product is supposed to look like.
I don't know about you, but I am a visual person and if my plans include lots of pictures, like illustrations and diagrams I am much happier to give it a go, but let me give you one more word about the list of materials, because it is just so important to make sure that the plan is complete.
With that I mean it shouldn't just tell you that you need 'a board', but should give you the specific length and depth and ideally there should be information suggesting the best type of wood for the chosen project. Let's not forget that the plan should be specific enough to include the amount of nails, screws etc. and also what type to use best. And if you are using a router or drill, it would come in handy if you'd been given information about what bit size to use. I know it all sounds quite obvious, but you might not have looked around for plans yet, so I am just sharing some of my experiences here with you, although I am sure you'll know when you have found a good woodworking plan.
